“Etnobotanica in Calabria”: a special recognition tribute to the rural world of Calabria. Five-hundred and thirty (530) plants are portrayed from the scientific, historical and cultural point of view in a publication (Rubbettino editore, pp. 341, 25€) which is a work among the most complete and fascinating in the Italian ethno-botany landscape. Oral memory and science are investigated and mixed with accuracy and intelligence by experts with a strong education, but mainly moved by a tireless passion for their own habitat. The Ethnobiology Study Centre of Valli Cupe Natural Reserve makes available an exceptional means to know more about the relationship between man and nature and culture and nature, which bases its roots on a millennial euro- Mediterranean tradition. Flowers and plants represent the chronicle of an old daily story told by trees, men, hands, means of work and leisure, objects of an agricultural archaeology which is relived in the present. It is not only about science. Do you know that in the forest there is a plant which no one ever managed to identify (the plant of loss, in dialect “l’erva do perdimìantu”) and – if you walk on it unintentionally- it is able to make you lose your sense of bearing, no matter if you are the most expert person in the knowledge of the places?

In the field of protected areas, the Natural Reserves are destined to maintain their balanced ecosystems so the environment protection is the main goal. In the same way, ecotourism is a kind of ecologic tourism which does not disturb the environment. This thesis aims to evaluate the perspectives of an ecotourism development of Valli Cupe Natural Regional Reserve. To do so the starting point is about the protected areas to finally get to the concept of ecotourism which allows to draw advantages to the local communities from an economic point of view. Later on, the description of the area is outlined, along with its touristic flow, as well as the procedures which led to institute the Natural Reserve. Then the methodology phase is described through the A’WOT hybrid model which allows to determine the strategies by assessing the elements which compose the SWOT analysis. The results underline how the promotion of the natural resources is able to change the economic face of the local community, but at the same time they draw attention to the critic aspects and obstacles which may provoke impediments within the process of the development of the area. So the strategies to be adopted are based on the opinions of the stakeholders being interviewed that are the protagonists, along with the environment, of the hole Reserve framework.

“This work is above all meant to be a recognition to the system of values embodied by the farm civilization, a real recognition tribute to the rural world of Calabria, which is the depositary of a knowledge system of very high level, although in the recent past it has been underestimated in a scornful and brisk way and – on the wave of an empty intellectualism of manner – it has been considered as a residual system of superstitions and popular beliefs without any cultural depth”. In those words you can catch the deepest meaning of this book that is able to guide the reader along a path which evokes incessant astonishment and surprise since it helps to find out the extraordinary richness of the floristic heritage of Calabria not only in terms of biodiversity, but also as an heritage of natural resources wisely used by the rural and peasant world.

“It’s not the preconception of the uncontaminated nature to guide the study and the work of these pages, but the relationship between land and men”. In these words the deepest meaning of this guide is kept. It is not meant to be only a cold and aseptic description of geographic places and naturalistic paths, but is mainly an attempt to bring out the intimate and fertile relationships which tie the territory to the human community that populate it.
Throughout this book the authors want to hold visitors hands and accompany them to the discovery of places full of fascination, history and culture where you can catch a glimpse of the close bond between the human element and the natural one. Such a bond represents the main feature of the rural world which makes it the depositary of an old system of knowledge to which the modern man can approach so as to relive the harmonies and the rhythms of nature…”.
